Gangnam Style, Dissected
Because: I had heard about K-Pop from friends; one was from Korea, others spent a summer there and some headed there to teach English after graduating. I never sought out the music, though. This absurd, fascinating video for “Gangnam Style” was my first encounter and won me over before the chorus had dropped. I had no idea what was being said or what it meant even on the literal level as I suspect is the case with most non-Korean-speaking viewers. This is article is like the guide to watching and further appreciating “Gangnam Style.”
After seeing this video for the first about five times, my friends and I continued watching video after video of K-Pop. Apparently K-Pop is cutting into the Buenos Aires Top 40 charts, too; in particular this song Mr. Simple. (We also watched a solid 20 minutes of the group behind Mr. Simple on Korea’s SNL which we also didn’t know existed. The hair styles sucked us in and we stayed.) Aft this session, eyes bleary, I came to conclude that K-Pop will take over the world.
On the bus the other day I heard a “Gangnam Style” ringtone. If it’s cool enough for trendy, image-conscious Argies, that speaks volume about its potential.
